We're thrilled to introduce the latest entrant in the Global Solo Challenge 2027-2028, which will begin and end in the picturesque setting of Vigo, hosted by the Real Club Náutico.
Interest in the event continues to grow, with inquiries and preparations under way from skippers around the globe. Several participants are in the process of purchasing or have recently acquired a boat for the challenge, even if their entry hasn't been publicly announced yet.
American skipper Brian Gray is the seventh sailor to commit to this incredible adventure, with an eighth confirmed entry to be announced soon. We anticipate that many more will follow in the coming months, as we are still more than three years away from the first boat setting sail. The entry process for the 2027 edition requires a higher initial financial commitment compared to the 2023 edition, where we saw several initial entries withdraw. This time, participants are fully committed from the outset, and the provisional entry list is expected to closely match the actual starting roster.
The Global Solo Challenge aims to grow the event organically, increasing the number of participants from the 16 skippers who set off in the first edition. The organization will maintain high safety standards, with a rigorous process for monitoring and inspecting compliance with regulations.
Born in 1960, Brian Gray has harbored the dream of circumnavigation throughout his life, and he now feels the time is right to undertake this challenge. Based in Annapolis, MD, USA, Brian began his sailing journey at the age of sixteen with a Snipe, which he learned to restore, maintain, and sail. His vessel for the challenge is "Humble Pi," a Pogo 44 designed by Finot-Conq and built in 2022. This fast cruiser, known for its suitability for short-handed sailing, benefits from the extensive experience of its designers and the reputable French boat builder, Structures.
Brian's passion for single-handed sailing stems from his love of the unique challenges it offers, from navigating through squalls to managing calm seas with patience. With a meticulous and comprehensive approach to preparation, Brian is gearing up for this solo circumnavigation. For him, this journey is not just about competing; it's about embracing the adventure and the essence of sailing. We eagerly anticipate his departure from Vigo and wish him the best as he prepares for this remarkable endeavor.
