New Zealand crews generally struggled on Day 2 of the 2024 Youth Worlds with only two crews improving their position on the leaderboard from Day 1.
The Ora thermal breeze was in from the start of racing which is being staged at Lake Garda, Northern Italy.
Zach Stibbe dropped back from second to sixth overall in the ILCA 6 Male Singlehanded Dinghy event. He placed 13th and 7th in the two races sailed. He now sits on 19pts with a big gap back to seventh overall in the 62 boat fleet.
Although the scorer caught up with the overnight protest action involving Tessa Clinton and Jessica Handley who were originally listed as second in the Female Two Person Dinghy event (420). At the end of Day 2 they had not one, but two alphabet places, with a UFD or starting disqualification sitting alongside their DSQ from Race 2 - and picked up the maximum 20pts score for each. They finished mid-fleet in Race 4. They are 15th in a fleet of 19, and will need to be consistent across the remaining three days in the regatta. Their results from Day 1 would indicate they are on the pace.
Will Leech and Sean Kensington improved to be third overall - despite picking up an alphabet score (UFD) in Race 6, the final race of the day in the Male/Mixed Skiff event (29er). There is a 10pt gap between the second and third overall, which may be too big to close. Again they will have to stay out of trouble for the rest of the series.
Hugo Wigglesworth improved to 7th overall in the Male Kiteboard, he posted a consistent set of three 6th places in the last three races of the day. He has not finished worse than 9th in the 14 strong fleet, and his best is 6th. He is 8pts behind the sixth overall, and with his consistent performance may struggle to lift above 7th overall.
Cam Brown and Alex Norman dropped back three places to be 12th overall place in the Male Mixed Two Person Dinghy (420), after placing 11th and 12th in the two races sailed. However they are just six points off seventh place, and again have the ability to climb up the leaderboard.
Bella Jenkins and Nicola Hume dropped three places to be 14th overall also out of 24 entries in the Female Skiff (29er). They sailed two races on Day 2, finishing 14th and 16th.
Chloe Turner scored 20th and 12th places in the two races sailed in the Female Dinghy (ILCA 6), and dropped four places overall in the 52 boat fleet.
Jack Parr remains on 25th overall after another four races in the Male Windsurfer (iQFoil) scoring 29, 25, 11, 19 in the 38 competitor fleet.
Sofia Currie remains in 22nd overall Female Windsurfer (iQFoil) out of a fleet of 26 entries, scoring 19, DNF, 22, 23 in the four races sailed and is now able to discard their two worst performances.
There are no New Zealand sailors in the Mixed Multihull (Nacra 15) which has attracted 12 entries.
There are no New Zealand sailors in the Female Kiteboard which has attracted only 6 entries.
