South Staffs SC welcomed the University of Birmingham Sailing Club for their annual Old Joe Competition from across the country. South staffs, UoB and University of Warwick boats where all used to make 3 flights of boat for an epic weekend of team racing.

Sailing clubs from across the country joined the University of Birmingham and South Staffs SC, for the Old Joe over the weekend, 8-9th June. With strong winds in the morning the first round robin began with South Staffs taking 1, 2, 3 against UCL Purple.

Around 1pm on Saturday, the gusts ushered the entire fleet to change into cutdown sails, it was a great sight to see everyone hurrying to hoist the cutdowns to carry on the round robin. At the end of play on the Saturday, Rutland Raiders where in the lead.

Up bright and early again on Sunday morning racing began again with South Staffs battling UCL Purple. Despite a sprinkle of rain, conditions where favourable for racing and the event was able to start on time. After the completion of the round robin the very exciting petite finals took place between West Oxfordshire Sailing Club and The Castaways. The grand finals also took place between Rutland and East Fife.

In the end the defending champions Rutland Raiders won the round robin. Closely followed by East Fife in 2nd, WOSC in 3rd and Castaways in 4th.

We really do hope that all teams enjoyed it as much as we did. We would like to take this opportunity to thank South Staffordshire Sailing Club for the use of their facilities over the weekend, and for once again, helping make The Old Joe such an enjoyable event. We would also like to thank our amazing umpires, Mike Weighhill, David Bickerton and Antonio Dionisio.
