J/70 European Championship at Mount Argentario, Italy - Day 3

by Julie & Christopher Howell 23 May 22:53 PDT

The J/70 European Championship in Cala Galera has seen eight thrilling races so far, with the leaderboard experiencing a roller coaster of changes. Eight different winners have emerged from the races, each securing victory without repeating their success so far.

Regaining the leadership position held on Day 1 is Wanderlust, helmed by owner Sofia Giondi, with a skilled crew including Luca Tubaro, Filippo Baldassari and Matteo Morellina. Despite a 58th place finish in Thursday's second race (which was later discarded as the series' worst result), Wanderlust remains consistently in the top-20 in all other races, maintaining their lead and dominating the Corinthian ranking.

In second place, both Overall and in the Corinthian category, is Jeepster, trailing Wanderlust by five points. Following closely is Good To Go, skippered by Doug Rastello and featuring renowned J/70 sailors Willem Van Waay, Morgan Trubovich and Steve Hunt. The top five is tightly contested, with Luis Albert's Patakin and Alessandro Molla's Viva in fourth and fifth place, respectively, separated by just 13 points.

The standout performer of the day was the Polish boat GRP Metikam, winning the prestigious Garmin Cup. This award, presented in collaboration with Garmin Marine Italy and the J/70 Italian Class, will be celebrated with a Garmin Quatix 5 smartwatch during Saturday's prize-giving ceremony.

Thursday's race victories were claimed by the Brazilian Ocean Pact, the Mexican Black Mamba and the German Sparky.

Races resume Friday at 11:30 AM. By Saturday, the final day of the event, the Race Committee, chaired by Giancarlo Crevatin, aims to complete up to six more races.
