29th Sušac Regatta at JK Mornar Preview

by Sinisa Andelic 20 May 02:02 PDT 7 June 2024

We are only few weeks away from the start of the 29th Sušac Regatta for double and single handed sailboats.

It is known as one of the most difficult Adriatic regattas.

Exactly at noon on 7th June 2024, in front of the city port of Split, and organized by Sailing Club "Mornar", crews will gather and head through the gates of Split towards the lonely offshore islet east of the island of Lastovo.

The first crews are expected back at the finish line already on Saturday morning.

If you think you are up to the challenge, send an race application! Applications for this year's regatta are open until Thursday 6th June 2024 on regatta email:

Regatta started exactly 29 years ago when group of enthusiasts started what was at that time considered crazy and bizarre. 10 boats sailed singlehanded and doublehanded on sailboats that were nowhere near adequate or equipped for such undergoing. That year southern wind exceeded 50 knots, and all 10 participants managed to finish, although some in matter of minutes before hull damages claimed their boats.

What they didn't know at that time is that this regatta will grow into longest running single and doublehanded race in Croatia, as well as they were pioneering this type of sailing on our side of Adriatic coast.

Although there are many stories of hard conditions and true seamanship along the years, reality is that crews can expect mild and warm Jun Mediterranean conditions and enjoyable sailing on this route.

Split, Croatia is surely growing to be top yachting and sailing destination in Mediterranean and with our closing to 30th Anniversary of this regatta, we are gearing up towards true sailing spectacle next year.

All those who will follow the regatta from the mainland can do so on the Sušac Facebook page: web.facebook.com/Susac100x2, which will report on the progress of the crews, the work of the regatta committee, and is always active kitchen that welcomes the contestants back to port with an warm meal.

Follow this spectacle, and get ready for next year's 30th anniversary.

2 (courage) x 100% (skill, self-punishment and madness) = Sušac!
