World Sailing appoints Jim Morris CB DSO as new Director of Events

by World Sailing 23 Apr 2024 02:42 PDT

World Sailing is delighted to announce the appointment of Jim Morris CB DSO as its new Director of Events.

Morris, a keen sailor, joins World Sailing after a distinguished military career in which he most recently served as the Standing Joint Force Commander within the UK government's Ministry of Defence. His time in the British armed forces saw him reach the rank of Major General after a series of strategic policy and active service roles.

David Graham, World Sailing Chief Executive Officer, said, "I look forward to welcoming Jim to World Sailing. As expected, we had very strong interest for the role; the selection panel were unanimous in their decision for Jim's appointment. As we implement our Olympic Vision and redefine our events strategy, Jim's leadership skills, experience in strategic planning and project management will hugely benefit the federation.

"Combined with his passion for sailing, this made him the outstanding candidate for the role. Jim is a uniquely qualified person who I expect to be a huge asset to the organisation as we continue to expand and fine-tune our portfolio of events for maximum impact and benefit to the global sailing community."

Morris added, "The chance to shape the future of a sport I love is an exciting opportunity and one I relish. I have been sailing since I was a teenager and I know what the sport can do for individuals and for communities.

"Throughout my career, I have built strong teams and worked collaboratively with stakeholders to deliver results in line with strategic goals. As World Sailing embarks upon several long-term objectives for sailing - particularly with regards to sustainability, accessibility, and commercial revenues - the challenge is one I look forward to meeting."

In the role of Director of Events, Morris will take a lead on strategic and operational planning and development of World Sailing's events, maintain and build relationships with all external stakeholders, and support Member National Authorities in their initiatives to grow and promote the sport.

Morris was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for outstanding personal leadership in Afghanistan and was appointed Companion of the Bath (CB) for services to UK Defence in the 2023 New Year's Honours List. Morris will take up the role of Director of Events at World Sailing on September 1.
