Viking 90 - The Power of 3

Incredible feats occur every day inside the Viking manufacturing facility, but what's been going on this winter outside the main plant has also been truly amazing: Our Make Ready Dock shipwrights have been working simultaneously on the completion of three Viking 90s - all sky bridge models.

Hull No. 8, the Haze Grey Humdinger (above and below), was delivered last week, and hull numbers 9 and 10 will follow in early spring.

"Delivering three 90s within the space of a few months shows the great capability of this facility and the value and experience of our people," says Wilber Blanco, Supervisor of the Make Ready Dock, which consists of two departments - Dock Finish and Mechanical Finish. Hull No. 10, a Flag Blue 90, spent last week on the hard, undergoing a comprehensive series of inspections and tests of systems and components to ensure proper operation. Before the boat was fueled and splashed, other departments and subsidiaries also had an opportunity to carry out their work. For instance, as shown above, a Palm Beach Towers installer takes measurements for the sky bridge hardtop.

Once launched, the hull is checked for water intrusion, an engine alignment verification is done and an engine manufacturer technician, scheduled to be on site, does his own system check before starting the engines. More tests and system checks are done before a start-up sea trial takes place. After that, the boat will be hauled and moved to Building 5 where it will receive a faux teak toe rail, transom, mezzanine and salon bulkhead.

Hull No. 9, which also sports a Haze Grey gelcoat, has already been through its sea trial performance testing. She's now in Building 5 being prepared for her faux teak package. The boat's toe rail, transom, salon bulkhead and door and lounge seating will receive faux teak. The hull will be protected with plastic so the work can be done, which explains the scaffolding. Palm Beach Towers team members (above and below) are shown installing outriggers before the faux job begins.

"There are a lot of moving parts," says Wilber. "And the larger the Viking, the more time it can take to complete specific jobs, so everyone needs to work together. And I think we do that very well."
