Excitement building for ORC Mediterranean Championship in Sorrento and Napoli

by Offshore Racing Congress 9 Feb 2024 09:10 PST 8-11 May 2024

The first full-crew regatta of the 2024 schedule of major ORC Championship events is the ORC Mediterranean Championship held over 8-11 May in Sorrento and 17-19 May in Napoli, Italy.

The event is hosted by the Circolo Remo e Vela Italia (CRVI) with cooperation from Yacht Club Italiano of Genova, Reale Yacht Club Canottieri Savoia of Naples, ORC and UVAI.

Already teams from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the USA are entered with many more expected for three days of competitive inshore racing in the beautiful clear waters between the scenic Sorrentine Peninsula and the island of Capri.

This will also be the first ORC full-crew championship event to use the new approved four-class division format with these classes defined by the following CDL limits:

  • Class 0: 16.400 = CDL > 13.550
  • Class A: 13.550 = CDL > 11.270
  • Class B: 11.270 = CDL > 9.630
  • Class C: 9.630 = CDL > 8.000

This new format updates the Notice of Race and promises to produce even closer racing among boats of similar rated performance than in previous editions of the event. Race starts will be made in two groups: Group 1 will include entries from Class 0 and Class A and Group 2 will include entries from Class B and Class C.

Another unique feature of the ORC Mediterranean Championship is that an overall winning team will be determined from among the top scoring entries in all classes who will receive ORC Mediterranean Champion titles. Titles for the Campionato Nazionale del Medio e Basso Tirreno will be also awarded to winners of each Group 1 and 2.

The first deadline for registration is 15 March 2024. More details and entry information can be found in the Notice of Race posted here.

The 2024 ORC Mediterranean Championship is an event of Tre Golfi Sailing Week that includes IMA Maxi European Championship and the 69th edition of the Regata dei Tre Golfi, the classic overnight offshore race where the fleet starts in Napoli, rounds Ponza Island and Li Galli Rocks before returning to finish in Napoli. Scores from this race are non-discardable in the results of the ORC Mediterranean Championship.

"We are excited to once again host the ORC Mediterranean Championship," said event chairman Maurizio Pavesi. "The race conditions here have proven to be some of the best on the ORC circuit of events, and for teams coming to attend this year they will get a preview of what to expect for this venue since we plan to host the ORC World Championship here in 2026."
