boot Dusseldorf 2024 video: Flo1 singlehanded foiler

One of the dinghies that caught my eye at boot Dusseldorf 2024 was the Flo1 by Aeronamics, the brainchild of founder Jurian Rademaker.

This singlehanded foiler has been highly engineered, but kept simple, with the aim of making foiling more accessible to everyday dinghy sailors.

The control systems for the lowering and hoisting of the foils are beside the centreboard with a clutch for release and led to cleats on the side deck for lifting. This has resulted in an extremely clean and ergonomic deck layout.

The Flo1 can be trolley launched, so is easy to go sailing from a beach or slipway with the foils lifted and the rudder in a cassette. In lowriding mode the boat is stable with the centreboard down, much like a conventional dinghy.

Once out in the breeze, the dinghy will get up and go, and as you can see is a blast!

Tension, Temperament and Trust
What makes a modern America's Cup sailor tick? Sailing an AC75 is not something every sailor can do. The myriad of controls, the split roles and the incredible speeds all make it a tricky proposition, but when you're sailing against an evenly-matched opponent, the difficulty goes to a whole new level.
