Ocean Globe Race: Translated 9 first to finish Leg 2 in 35-40kt winds in Auckland

Translated 9 became the first to finish Leg 2 of the Ocean Globe Race in Auckland just after mid-day on Tuesday.

Translated 9 took 36days 15hrs to sail the 7,000nm leg.

Two other competitors have rounded North Cape and are sailing down the Northland coast of and are expected to finish during the night. Pen Duick VI is expected to finish, probably around 2200hrs, with Spirit of Helsinki in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

The upper North Island is being pummelled with strong offshore winds that were averaging 35kts, gusting 40kts around the time Translated 9 (formerly ADC Accutrac, a competitor in the 1977/78 Whitbread Round the World Race, skippered by Clare Francis). The winds have eased slightly since Translated 9 finished.

There are 14 boats in the race, with the Farr design Maiden approaching North Cape, and the bulk of the remainder of the fleet scattered across the Tasman Sea, however several boats are yet to round Cape Leewin.

The Ocean Globe race is a no technology crewed race around the world sailing the the traditional four leg Whitbread Round the World Race course. It celebrates 50 years of Whitbread Round the World Races, boats and sailors. 14 yachts are competing in four divisions.
