In 2005-06, the Volvo Ocean Race broke with tradition by starting outside the UK, from Vigo, Spain, to Cape Town, South Africa. Introducing the Volvo Open 70 boat class added excitement but posed challenges on the 31,000 nautical mile global route.

Notably, Leg 7 saw tragedy as Hans Horrevoets was lost aboard ABN AMRO TWO. The Dutch crew faced further adversity, rescuing Movistar after a catastrophic failure. Movistar's skipper, Bouwe Bekking, made the tough call to abandon ship, and the crew transferred to ABN AMRO TWO with Horrevoets' recovered body.

ABN AMRO ONE, skippered by Mike Sanderson, claimed victory, marking the pinnacle of his career.
