The Sailing Innovation Center within the Dutch water sport association, Watersportverbond, has partnered with data and technology consultancy Portera to apply data and analytics to unlock the performance potential of Dutch sailors in future competitions.

The collaboration will see Portera derive tangible value from team performance data and contextual and environmental data points such as current, wind shifts, race performance, and equipment changes to give Dutch sailors a competitive advantage.

The mission of the Sailing Innovation Center is to help accelerate innovations in sailing. In doing so, the center supports the Netherlands' sporting ambitions in sailing, promotes interest in the sport, and contributes to economic growth by aiding companies in realizing new and improved products and services. In short, more medals, introducing more people to the sport of sailing, and more business. The Dutch Olympic Committee and the Dutch Sport Federation also support this initiative.

Data insight has a proven track record in driving sporting performance, initially with David Brailsford delivering marginal gains for Team Sky cycling. More recently, data analytics significantly influenced Europe's 2023 Ryder Cup success in Italy.

The collaboration between the Sailing Innovation Center and Portera aims to bring a competitive advantage to the Dutch sailing teams by harnessing the power of data to generate actionable insights. Portera works with various businesses to bring data together, formulate insight, build activation plans, monitor performance, and deliver results.

"Elite performance in sport, as in business, is about executing precise actions based on accurate data insights," says Baris Kavakli, Managing Director at Portera. "Through this collaboration with Sailing Innovation Center, we are working with a shared ambition of driving performance through data and exploring how technology, data and analytics can improve sailing performance."
