One look at the daily firsts will prove our invited skippers are truly Masters of this sport. After the second day of sailing we have completed nine races and each of those races has been won by a different skipper.
Earning an invitation to the International Masters Regatta is a feat in itself, but this years skippers are proving to be perhaps the most equally matched and skillful sailors we have seen yet. The caliber of sailing on the course today was unparalleled as each race brought new excitement and anticipation. Spectators waited to see who would seize the coveted bullet. All our master skippers are showing their hunger to claim their very first Masters win.
Day two started off with near perfect conditions for this J/105 fleet, with slightly less velocity than yesterday the wind filled in early and kept sailors on their toes as it shifted from west to north across the South Bay. Skipper Gary Jobson won the pin end and set off toward the favored left side. We saw our tightest mark rounding of the day at the first weather mark, solidifying the fact that this group of skippers were all here to play. Ultimately, Skipper Tracy Usher's team handily took the first victory of the day.
In the third race, Jobson and Cory Sertl taught a master class on extending the lead, with Jobson finishing minutes before Sertl, and both of them crossing the line well before the rest of the fleet. Jobson continued to impress, winning the day and climbing his way into the top three overall.
Although the standings moved after each race, the racing remained tight. In addition to Usher and Jobson, we saw first place finishes from Don Jesberg, Rick Goebel, and Scott Harris. Heading into tomorrow's last and final day of racing, Harris commands the leader board, followed closely by Tad Lacey in second and a two-way tie for third between Jobson and Sertl.
After the racing, sailors were invited to put on their Banquet's best and head back to the Front Deck and Main Dining Room for the traditional Saturday Night Banquet and roast. Tomorrow, they will face off in the final day of races and the most deserving Master skipper will be titled the International Masters Regatta champion!
Spectators are encouraged to bring out their boats or hop aboard a friend's for one or all of the racing days on the water! Remember to hashtag #sdycmasters when posting about the event.
