The Border Counties Midweek Travellers series sailed at a venue new to them on Tuesday 25th July - Llyn Brenig, on the border of Conwy and Denbighshire. Llyn Brenig Sailing Club is based on a 900 acre reservoir, almost 380m above sea level, making it the highest sailing club in Wales, if not quite in the UK.

The day looked promising with north westerly winds from 7 knots, gusting 15 being forecast for the day, and the forecast proved to be accurate.

27 boats with 32 sailors took to the water for the first race, ranging from a F101 foiling trimaran to a Topper. The course was set to take in 3 laps of most of the northern part of the sailing area, with the wind being a reasonably consistent 11-12 knots.

After a clean start the RS100 8.4 of Andy Todd (Bala SC) led the first lap, with Daniel Partington's RS Vareo (Bala SC) second, and local hero Andrew Roberts in a Contender in third. The Supernovas of Pete Coop and Eric Haselden were not far behind. Positions changed at the front, and it was Andrew Roberts who took line honours at the end, but Daniel Partington Bala took the first place on corrected time, with Pete Coop, Supernova (Winsford) second and Andy Todd Bala in third.

After lunch the Race Officer set a shorter course for two races back to back, with the wind speed having picked up a little, and gusts reaching the predicted 15 knots. The fleet got away after another clean start, and at the end of lap one the same boats were in contention at the front of the fleet, Daniel Partington, Andrew Roberts and Andy Todd trading places, with the Supernovas not far behind.

First across the line was Andrew Roberts, while on corrected time Pete Coop came in first this time with Daniel second and Andy Todd in third. There were no course changes for the third race, which took in four laps of the course. This time line honours went to Andy Todd, but again the Supernovas were close on corrected time. Daniel Partington took first place, with Pete Coop and Eric Haselden in second and third respectively.

At the prize-giving there were thanks to the local club members who made the event possible, and a widely expressed view that Llyn Brenig Sailing Club should become a regular venue in the Border Counties Midweek travellers series.

Next event in the series is at Redesmere Sailing Club on Tuesday 8th August for more information see bordercountiesmidweeksailing.wordpress.com
