Typhoon UK 29er Nationals & Open Championships Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy Overall

by UK 29er Class Association 27 Jul 2023 04:55 PDT 22-26 July 2023

Australia's Joel Beashel and Logan Radford won the Open British Nationals boys and overall with USA Laura Hamilton and Carolina Zager being first in the ladies. Ireland's Ben O'Shaughnessy and Ethan Spain were second overall.

The British Championship went to Charlie Gran and Sam Webb, who were also third overall, and to Annabel Vines and Maddie Bilbrough in the ladies.

The Championships was held in Weymouth, with a total of 90 boats. With variable conditions, the race committee led by Ian Bullocks ran a successful four days of races, with two sailed in the harbour and the two in the bay.

"Final day of racing saw us out on the bay with four high quality races to finish the series in a range of conditions, fairly stable", Max Todd, British 29er National Coach said, "Congratulations to the International teams for taking the overall win in both boys and girls and to the British National Champions boys Charlie and Sam and Annabel and Maddie."

New British Champion crewing Charlie Gran, Sam Webb, was very happy with their performance and ready for a break, 'after four days of tough racing we are ready for a rest before the Worlds. It was an awesome regatta and we are happy to be third overall and first British boat', he said.

As for the Brits Champions in the girls, Maddie Bilbrough, who crews Annabelle Vines, also felt they achieved their goal for this regatta, in preparation for the Worlds "It was a really great event, lots of tough competition thanks to all the international crews. We had bit of a tricky last day but we came out really excited that we got to work on all the things that we wanted to and we feel that we have improved a lot. There was also a great atmosphere and it was a lot of fun."

The event was round up with an impressive Prize Giving, including Gala Dinner and Live Band, held in the hanger of the Sailing Academy, which was beautifully dressed for the occasion. All 180 participants were invited as well as their coaches, friends and family.

Thanks to the sponsors Typhoon, to the Sailing Academy and to the 29er British Committee for organising an impeccable and fun Championships.
