21-26 July 2023
Get ready as the GWA Wingfoil World Cup Fuerteventura is set to stage Surf-Freestyle and FreeFly-Slalom competitions at the fifth tour stop of the year at Playa Sotavento!
The athletes who put in big performances at last week's tour stop at Pozo Izquierdo, in neighbouring Gran Canaria, in cranking 35-40 knots winds, will be hoping to repeat their success.
But with the prospect of slightly less wind—in the 20-25 knots range—the conditions could help shake up the order among the 40 men and 10 women, from 14 nations around the world, who are slated to battle.
The ongoing duel in the Surf-Freestyle discipline between Chris MacDonald from the US and the reigning world champion Malo Guénolé from France promises to be captivating.
In the men's FreeFly-Slalom, Bastien Escofet, who was the tour leader before the Pozo event, will be looking for a fresh start after finishing behind veteran racer Titouan Galea from France, who secured the victory.
Italy's Francesco Cappuzzo and Alan Fedit, who claimed the second and third spots on the podium, will aim to improve their performance in the different wind and water conditions at Sotavento.
In the women's Surf-Freestyle and FreeFly-Slalom, 16-year-old Nia Suardiaz from Spain is in exceptional form, making it difficult for her closest rivals, French riders Orane Ceris and Flora Artzner, to challenge her dominance.
While the established order seems strong, anything is possible, and the show is guaranteed to be thrilling. Watch all the action on the livestream starting Saturday, 22nd July on GWA YouTube, Facebook and website.
