B14 World Championship at Circolo vela Torbole, Lake Garda, Italy - Day 3

by Russ Gibbs 19 Jul 2023 22:25 PDT 17-21 July 2023

Storms from the North (Peler) kept the more usual Ora wind at bay, and these storms had settled nicely by 1pm for the two race day.

In race 5 the fleet just managed to cross the start line on starboard in 15 to 20 knots of hot breeze and early port tackers found the right to their advantage.

Brits Wattsy and MJ led from Nick Craig and Tobytastic, and finished in that order from Craig Garmston and Paul Fleming from Australia. After some on-shore gybing coaching, Brits Barnsie and Simon Reynolds took fourth with Starcross YC boat sailed by Tony Blackmore and Jamie Dawson fifth.

Thierry and Michael from France deserve a special mention in ninth, having managed finally to sail a race with without a fair amount of Lake Garda in their buoyancy tanks.

Race 6 was far lighter with 5 to 10 knots of breeze from the North. Close tacking up the east shore towards Mark 1 saw Aussies Craig Garmston and Paul Fleming lead from Brits Nick Craig and Tobytastic. In a fading wind the PRO nicely called a shortened race at the second windward mark. Garmston and Fleming hung on to win from Craig and Tobytastic.

Third were Aussie sailors Tristan Williams and Hugo Briggs who only just made the start of Race 6 having had to re-rig and fit a new mast as sailors were leaving to get to the race an hour earlier.

Barnsie and Simon were fourth and Richie Reynolds and Lissa McMillan from Sydney were fifth. In 12th were Amy and Dave Roberts from Royal Torbay who steadied the ship to get their best race of the series.

More information and the latest results can be found on the Circolo vela Torbole website.
