If you've stopped into the boat yard at any point over the last two years, odds are you were greeted by a mammoth-sized project in the main shop. That project was Djinn, the total restoration of a 63' Sparkman & Stephens motor sailer. Now, Djinn is on her way to Boothbay Harbor after being launched in June complete with new hull, interiors and systems.

There are undoubtedly different levels of restoration an owner can consider when restoring a wooden boat, but Djinn's restoration was top-notch with no expense spared to make her a traditional, yet totally modern cruiser. She possesses every creature comfort one might need or want on the sea. Indeed, when asked why the owners chose Brooklin Boat Yard, the captain says, "There aren't many places in the world capable of doing this sort of restoration." About his experience working with BBY to restore Djinn, Greg says, "It's been an incredible experience. The work is really good."

Brian Larkin, our President, likes to call some restorations "shadow restorations," as they require restoring (or replacing) everything but the shadow of a boat. While Djinn wasn't quite a shadow restoration (she still has her original teak deck for example), she was close. You can see her before photos on the Djinn page of our website here to observe the drastic difference between the start and finish of her restoration.

On a foggy, misty day in June, the crew launched Djinn into Center Harbor with Greg, the captain, standing close by. She'll go down as one of our most historic restorations, and we will treasure the experience and opportunity she provided. But, with her out there on the seas wherever she may go, we know Djinn will offer a safe and sound stay for her family.

Further on in the newsletter, you can read about the extraordinary engine room inside Djinn and meet one of the finish carpenters who worked extensively on her interior woodworking.
