WASZP European Games Warm-Up Event at Yacht Club de Carnac

by Marc Ablett 13 Jul 2023 23:27 PDT 9-13 July 2023

Hippolyte Gruet wins the WASZP Euros Warm-up ahead of taking on 156 competitors at next week's European Games

The wind once again picked up on the final day of the WASZP European Warm-Up. At 1:50pm, Race Committee President Michel Couliou finally made the decision not to race today as the wind had not decided to pick up. In true WASZP style, only 2pts separated the podium at the event.

After 10 validated races, Hippolyte Gruet is the Overall Winner of WASZP European Warm Up 2023. He also won the regatta in the Apprentice category (21-39). The young Frenchman has had a fantastic start to the European season in the WASZP after his 2nd place at Foiling Week, a little over a week ago. Gruet would be confident heading into the European WASZP Games at ENVSN that start in three days.

Second place goes to Markus Berthet who finishes the regatta on a point from the winner. The Norwegian also rises to the highest podium step in the Youth (U21) category.

Titouan Petard, after leading the fleet for most of the event, finishes in third place one and two points from his direct competitors. The battle would have been close between the three leaders and the Frenchman selected for the Youth America's Cup shined with his regularity.

Micha de Weck wins in the Junior category (U18) with a beautiful 5th place overall. Jervis Tilly finishes winner (20th overall) in the Super Master category (50+) Pierre Poitevin adds victory in the Masters (40+) (21st overall).

Finally, Mathilde Géron finishes 17th place and first female.

This four-day regatta would have been a treat for the sailors who encountered varied conditions and were able to show off their skills. The WASZP offered a superb show and great sportsmanship, in line with the values of YC Carnac and the WASZP class. Sailors, volunteers and employees will remember an event where they rhymed competition, commitment and enthusiasm.

Attention now shifts to the 2023 European WASZP Games with 156 sailors ready to rumble at ENVSN next week. The sailors will begin to congregate on site and are ready to light up the Bay of Quiberon!
