Europeans WASZP Games 2023: 150 sailors set for the Baie de Quiberon

by Classe WASZP France 29 Jun 2023 21:55 PDT 16-23 July 2023

The European WASZP Games will take place from July 16th to 23rd at the Ecole Nationale de Voile et des Sports Nautiques (ENVSN) in Saint-Pierre Quiberon.

Organized by the French WASZP class association, the International WASZP class association, the French WASZP agent Manu Guedon and KA Sails, the WASZP creator, with the Morbihan Sailing Comittee for the offshore organization, this event will gather more than 150 sailors in the baie de Quiberon. Sailors coming from all over the world will represent 20 countries such as USA, Greece, Argentina or New-Zealand.

An open-minded, dynamic and friendly class association

The WASZP Class is renowned around the world for its energy and its open-mindedness. Sailing WASZP is opened to all sailors, whatever their level or age.

Five categories will fight in the baie: Junior (U20), Youth (20-25), Apprentice (26-39), Master (40-49) et Super Master (50+).

The famous "green fleet" will be organised for beginners. The "green fleet" enables all competitors to have access to coachs dedicated to their progress. The "green fleet" is free and doesn't require registration.

Thirty women will also be competing, some of them with strong track records: Mathilde Géron, French 470 champion including a 4th place at the London 2012 Olympic Games and skipper of the ETF26 Lady Team Pro or Hattie Rogers, several times WASZP Champion and youngest ever winner of Yachtsman of the Year award in 2022.

French fleet

More than thirty French WASZP sailors will compete and try to make sparks during the Games. Make sure you follow Titouan Pétard and Théo Revil, selected in the French team Youth America's Cup, Hippolyte Gruet, 3rd at the San Francisco Sail GP and 2023 French WASZP Champion, as well as Nathan Sassy, 2022 French WASZP Champion.

Warm up in Carnac

From July 9th to 13th, the Yacht Club de Carnac (YCC) will host the European Warm up: four days to train and discover the playground, in a friendly atmosphere. 25 sailors are already awaited.

They said

Pierre Dalibot, President of the French WASZP class association: "We are very happy to organize this event and to welcome different sailors from all over the world, from "green fleet" to experts. We have already more than 130 sailors who have registered, which was our aim. We are now completing the organisation. We are very lucky to be supported by the French Sailing Federation, the ENVSN and the Morbihan Sailing Committee. Their expertise is an important help to organise events in a serene atmosphere".

Hattie Rogers: "The WASZP is a fantastic one design class which provides really close, fun racing. It's the perfect introduction to the foiling world but it is equally very competitive on the water. The class has a great atmosphere on and off the water with a wide age group range meaning anyone can come and get involved."

Mathilde Géron: "I'm totally addicted to the WASZP! Speed, sensations, large fleets, I love that! I first sailed a WASZP during summer 2021. I choose the WASZP for the price, the dynamic class and because there's not much work on it to sail fast. I wanted to have a nice toy at home, a solo boat, simple and efficient. I'm looking forward to the European Games, it's going to be a superb event. My aim: sail in the gold fleet, I hope the level won't be too high!"
