Italian RS Aero National Regatta series at Limone Garda Sailing ASD - Overall

by Elena Giolai 12 Apr 2023 14:49 PDT 7-9 April 2023

Ten regattas with consistently light winds were the balance of the 2nd RS Aero National Regatta, excellently organised by Limone Garda Sailing. An event that had as its logistical base the spiaggetta Cola, a few metres from the centre of Limone, allowing most people to discover the beauty of this part of Lombardy's Garda.

The final classifications were decided, above all in the RS Aero 6 class, only with the last three races, revolutionising the podium as predicted on the eve of the event, considering the scores of the first five finishers who had minimal, if any, gaps between them. But even in the RS Aero7 the battle for the final victory was no small one, as the Briton Peter Barton, thanks to a sensational finish, nibbled several points off the Sardinian Filippo Vincis. Only Francesca Ramazzotti (Veliamoci asd, Oristano) was unrivalled in the RS Aero5, winning by a clear margin.

In the more numerous RS Aero6 category Giacomo Gatta (CN Savio), after a valuable experience in the FIV RS Feva youth double, is also coming to the fore in this single class: in particular in the final phase of the Limone Nationals, with two firsts and a second partial, he managed to overcome his direct opponents, winning the final victory even with a certain distance (5 points), ahead of Leonardo Nonnis (LNI del Sulcis), who gave up the leadership, and Francesco Columbano (YC Cala dei Sardi) who came in third, tied with Nonnis. Alice Sussarello, first female.

Among the larger RS Aero7 sails, there was a real duel race after race between the Lega Navale del Sulcis's Filippo Sulcis and the Briton Peter Barton: between the two ended in favour of the former, who with a 2-2-1 final managed to keep 1 point behind the Briton, who with two firsts and a second came close to the final victory. More distant, in third place, was Davide Mulas.

After three beautiful days of sailing, the RS Aero fleet confirmed its spirit of friendship among participants and coaches: for everyone the goal is to arrive at the end of July (26-30) in the best possible shape to compete in the World Championship scheduled in Calasetta (South Sardinia), organised by the Sulcis Naval League. The next national regatta, which follows Ostia and Limone, is scheduled at the end of April in Cagliari, one of the most active Italian federation Zones in the RS Aero class.

"With the Rs Aero 6," explains Guido Sirolli, President of the Italian Class, "we have completed the offer of this fabulous boat of only 31kg built in carbon and able to be the boat for athletes from 45 to 95kg thanks to its 4 arms, 5,6,7 and 9 square metres!

After the World Championship in Calasetta in July, thanks to the collaboration with Negri Nautica, we will organise a series of technical rallies in Rome and Cagliari from October to November for girls and boys interested in changing class. There are in fact over 300 Optimist and Open Skiff athletes interested in discovering which boat to continue their sailing adventure with, and we are ready to welcome them!"
