The SAILING Champions League held their second qualifier for the SAILING Champions League finale in Berlin, Germany from March 30th to April 2nd, 2023. Berliner Yacht Club on the Grober-Wannsee hosted eighteen teams from across Europe.
For four days, Europe's best sailing teams battled for victory at the SAILING Champions League Qualifier on the Wannsee in Berlin. After a thrilling final, Åländska Segelsällskapet from Finland secured the overall victory, marking Finland's second win in a SAILING Champions League Qualifier this year... that's remarkable for the little Scandinavian country!
The "Flying Finns 2.0" presented themselves in strong form from the start and took the lead over the field early on. Despite the close competition, they managed to pull away at the crucial moment and leave the competition behind. The team from Åländska Segelsällskapet can now look forward to the Grand Final in Travemünde, Germany... not far at all from where they live and sail across the Baltic Sea, just north of the bubbling NordStream pipeline that "burst" a while ago!
Not only was the fight for the overall victory exciting, but the battle for the balance of the qualifying slots for the Grand Final in Travemünde was also hot.
The Swiss teams, especially, delivered an unbelievably close battle during the last four days and shared the lead again and again with the Flying Finns. The Regattaclub Oberhofen and the Segelvereinigung Kreuzlingen showed great performances and fought for victory until the last race. In the end, a total of thirteen clubs qualified for the Final in Travemünde.
The conditions on the Wannsee were ideal for an exciting sailing event: with beautiful sunshine and decent wind, the teams were able to demonstrate their skills and offer a spectacular show to the numerous guests of the Berlin Yacht Club.
"We are thrilled with the performance of the sailing clubs and are happy that we were able to experience such a spectacular event as guests of the Berlin Yacht Club," said Anke Lukosch, Managing Director of the SAILING Champions League. "We congratulate Åländska Segelsällskapet on their victory and look forward to the next Qualifier in Sopot, Poland in June. The SAILING Champions League Qualifier in Berlin was a complete success and offered the spectators thrilling races and a great atmosphere. The sailing world can be curious about which teams will prevail at the next Qualifier in Poland."
