The Olympic class regatta signs an agreement with the Mallorcan company Trueword to implement an innovative environmental strategy.

The neutralisation of the carbon footprint of the Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca by Iberostar will be the first step in implementing a new plan to manage its environmental impact based on technological innovation, on guaranteeing the efficiency and transparency of its management and commitng to help to protect and look after the fragile ecosystems of the Balearic Sea.

"The ultimate goal is to make decarbonisation part of the culture of the Princesa Sofia, as we know that the climate emergency is a serious problem. It is time to commit and act in a responsible, impactful way," explains Javier Zaynoun, director of the 52 Princesa Sofia.

To achieve this, the Trofeo Princesa Sofía has teamed up with the Mallorcan company TrueWorld, which has developed its new sustainability strategy. This will be implemented progressively, committing to protecting the environment by managing all the environmental risks associated with the regatta's activity.

Zero emissions

The first milestone of TrueWorld's collaboration will be to enable the Princess Sofia Trophy to be an emissions neutral event by measuring and controlling its carbon footprint.

The event has aligned its operations with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the United Nations Race to Zero campaign and the goals of the Paris Agreement: to limit the average global temperature increase to two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, to redouble efforts not to exceed 1.5 degrees by the end of this century and to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

Manuel Bauzá, Trueworld's communications director, highlights that in this way the Princess Sofia Trophy will be more responsible than ever: "It sets ambitious climate targets within the Race to Zero campaign and sport for climate action of the United Nations".

A key element to optimise the environmental performance that Trueworld will implement is the installation of infrastructures and innovative technology such as home automation, aquatic drone sensors to visualise the seabed and air quality sensors. Blockchain technology will also be used in the Princess Sofia Trophy through a marine climate change station that will ensure traceability and transparency of management and data.

On board Stenella

The colaboration agreement with Trueworld will also allow the solar electric boat Stenella to monitor the races while collecting data through its mobile marine climate change station. This research vessel actively collaborates in research projects that contribute to the maintenance of biodiversity and the preservation of natural ecosystems.

In addition to the two regatta venues, another of Trueworld's venues will be Palma beach, where a stand will be set up to present the project's literacy workshops on the Mediterranean, biodiversity and citizen science.

In addition, a communication and dissemination strategy will be developed for the values and environmental mission of the organisation, the events and the regattas through a clear and transparent message that connects with the public and helps to promote sustainability among participants, attendees and stakeholders.

Trueworld is a technology company from Mallorca formed by a multidisciplinary group of scientists, researchers and technicians from a wide variety of backgrounds (geographers, biologists, environmentalists, physicists, programmers,...) who have teamed up with journalists, communicators and creatives to promote the fight against the climate crisis through the creation and implementation of comprehensive projects.

The 52 Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía Mallorca by Iberostar is the first qualifying event for the Sailing World Cup 2023 and will be held from 29 March to 8 April under the joint organisation of the Club Nàutic S'Arenal, the Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, the Real Club Náutico de Palma, the Real Federación Española de Vela and the Federación Balear de Vela, with the backing of World Sailing and the main Balearic public institutions.

It is funded by the European Union Next Generation EU, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and the Balearic Islands Tourism Strategy Agency.
