US Sailing has opened registration for the 2023 Youth Championship presented by SouthCoast Wind, which will take place June 26-30 on the Roger Williams University campus in Bristol, RI. Regular entry registration closes on April 30, and late entry closes on May 15.
The U.S. Youth Championship, also known as the "Youth Champs," is US Sailing's pinnacle youth regatta, featuring the top sailors and the most challenging performance boat classes. First sailed in 1973, this year marks the 50th Anniversary of this iconic event. The regatta is open to nationally competitive sailors under age 20 and competing in the i420, 29er, Nacra 15, ILCA 6, ILCA 7, iQFOiL Youth, and Formula Kite.
For the first time in history, the 2023 Youth Champs will be an open event, with no application or invitation process required to be eligible. This year's Youth Champs will also be the qualifier for World Sailing's 2023 Youth World Championship, with the top eligible teams in each class qualifying to represent the USA at Youth Worlds.?
"We are thrilled to be hosting the 50th anniversary U.S. Youth Championship at Roger Williams University this June," said US Sailing Youth Competition Manager John Pearce. "The sailing conditions in Bristol are ideal, and the new updated regatta format will allow more sailors to participate than ever before. If you're a nationally competitive sailor with aspirations to compete for our top championship titles, we hope to see you there."
The Youth Champs bring together the nation's top sailors, race officials, and coaches, including National and International Race Officials and expert US Sailing Coaches to support each Class. Past US Sailing Coaches have included Olympians, World Champions, and Rolex Yachtsman & Yachtswomen of the Year winners. Private coaches are also welcome and must register for the event by June 1st.
This year's Youth Champs will feature iconic trophies such as the David M. Perry Sportsmanship Award, along with several new additions. The new Trevor Moore Trophy is the perpetual trophy for the Doublehanded Skiff Event (29er Class), to honor the memory of Olympic sailor Trevor Moore, his love of the sport, and his passion for excellence. Additionally, the Smythe and Bemis Trophies will be awarded to the top sailors racing in their first Youth Champs, following a recent rededication of those trophies to this Championship.
