Boat 1 (Shane Smith) has dominated the recently completed Elliott 5.9 Southern Circuit.

After narrowly finishing second to Retro (Carla Bennett) in Round 1 of the three regatta circuit, which also doubled as the South Island Championship, Boat 1 went on to claim wins in both Round 2 (Lyttelton) and round 3 (Nelson)

However, racing was always tight and Nelson based boat Eagle (Mark Howard) pushed Boat 1 all the way with only seconds separating the two boats on a number of occasions. Eagle eventually had to settle for a well deserved second overall.

Other Christchurch based boats also performed well with Brillant (Kirsten Disse) and Chop (Glen Hoban-Watson) rounding out the top four overall.

These boats will now be looking positively toward the upcoming Elliott 5.9 National Championships that will be held in Picton 23 - 25 March 2023.

With 20 boats expected to front on the start line for the nationals, competition will be intense. Much interest will focus on the recently crowned Southern Circuit champions as they take on the reigning National Champions, R+R, along with a number of other well performed boats from the North Island based Traveller Series.

About The Elliott 5.9 The Elliott 5.9 emerged in the early 1980’s as a high performing trailer yacht and continues to deliver competitive one design racing in a welcoming fleet of world-class sailors and novices alike. The boats started a revolution with their well-balanced and cost effective design, and quickly became the boat of choice for top club training schemes and a breeding ground for NZ’s America’s Cup, Ocean Race and Olympic champions.

Sailed by a crew of three, the Elliott 5.9 remains a low maintenance sailboat with an efficient single spreader fractional rig, a well-balanced sail plan and practical deck layout. Whether sailing among mixed trailer yachts, sport boat fleets or in a one design setting, the 5.9 is celebrated for its responsiveness and outstanding value.
