International 14 Australian Championships at Black Rock Yacht Club - Overall

by Daniel Vaughan 9 Jan 2023 23:05 PST 28 December 2022 - 6 January 2023

The last day of racing with Heat 7 scheduled was a blowout as a strong ESE had kicked up overnight and was gusting to 30 knots. Even if the breeze was able to drop to a more acceptable level, as the easterly comes in off the land and over the hills it swings around 20 degrees, so setting a true course becomes even more challenging.

After eight days of racing and a variety of different breezes we have wrapped up another Australian Championships, it has been 3 years since our last major competition with the World Championships in Perth 2019-2020 due to the Covid outbreak and state lockdowns.

What makes the International 14 class so special is the cameraderie amongst its sailors, the class motto "14s are forever" captions this perfectly, with many of the sailors having been in the class for more than 40 years. Our infamous Legends Day is a chance for ex-i14 sailors to regroup and tell old war stories, this year was no exception with more than 100 sailors flying in from all over the country to attend. This championship was about catching up with great friends and doing some great sailing.

Mark Krstic and James Lanati on Sticky Fingers put on a dominant display all regatta and took out a well-deserved win overall from the ever-masterful Lindsay Irwin and Andrew Perry on Ronstan/Irwin Sails and Brad Devine and Ian Furlong on Del Boca Vista taking out third overall.

We can't forget the young guns Will Wallis and Hugh Hickling who showed us their skills all regatta to place first on handicap.

Presentation Night was a chance for everyone to let their hair down and enjoy the end of another fantastic regatta in the International 14 Class, thank you to Black Rock Yacht Club, the competitors, volunteers and sponsors for making this event happen. Your continued support is what makes this class so special.
