The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world
Maiden and her all-female crew sailed into Cape Town on Thursday 5 January 2023, after 30 days and 4950+ nautical miles at sea. GM Toni Mainprize and Kerry Pryde from the Sailing Department were there to meet them at sea and guide them to Quay 6 in front of The Table Bay Hotel.
Tracy Edwards who is the founder of the organisation, is a British sailor and skippered the first all-female crew in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race in 1989. She became the first woman to receive the Yachtsman of the Year Trophy and was appointed MBE by the Queen. This phenomenal woman who has penned two books about her experiences, will be presenting an inspirational talk on Tuesday 10 January at 18h00 at the Club.
The Maiden Factor is a Global Ambassador for the Empowerment of Girls through Education and raises funds for girls' educational programmes around the world. During the 21 days stopover in Cape Town, the crew will engage with school children, charities, outreach programmes and organisations that are committed to inspiring and empowering girls through education.
There are three South Africans onboard - Lungi, aged 39 is originally from Johannesburg, and is the mother figure on the boat. She keeps an eye on the two other South African ladies: Nqobile Khuzwayo (19) hails from Natal and is a Lawhill Maritime student, and Vee aged 24 (Jaca Vuyisile) is from Sail Africa.
According to The Maiden Factor website research, 130 million girls worldwide are currently denied an education. The Maiden Factor believes when you educate a girl, eradication of world poverty becomes possible. Practical implications of educating girls include:
- Improving the socio-economic status of her and her country by educating her family and community
- Reducing infant mortality rates
- Reducing child marriage by 64%
- Reducing early births by 59%
- Reducing the spread of HIV and AIDS and other global viruses
- Increasing women's enormous potential to contribute to the bio-diversity conversation, development of sustainable industry and farming and climate activism
Schools, ladies in sailing and ladies' groups are invited to attend the talk on Tuesday 10 January at 18h00. Please RSVP to marketing@rcyc.co.za by Monday 9 January.
