From December 3rd to 9th, 2022, the Veleiros do Sul Yacht Club in Porto Alegre, Brazil hosted the fourteen-boat J/70 fleet for this year's South American Championship.

The VSYC Race Committee and PRO team managed to run 11 of the 12 races scheduled, much to the delight of all sailors.

It was a dramatic battle for the podium and when the dust had cleared from the battlefield, just five points separated the top four boats. In the end, it was a sweep of the podium by Brazilian teams. Winning was Renato Cunha's TO NESSA with a crew of Marco Grael, Kadja Brandão, Felipe Fraquelli, and André Fonseca- crowned the 2022 South American Champions!

Just three points back tied at 40 pts each were two other tough competitors. Winning the countback to take the silver medal was Haroldo Solberg's VIKING with a crew of Geison Mendes, Mario Tinoco, and Gabriel Silva.

Losing that heartbreaking countback to at least salvage a bronze medal was Silvio Morelli's MALCRIADO with a crew of Samuel Albrecht, Gustavo Thiesen, and Rodolfo Streibel.

Corinthians Division

In the Corinthian Division, winning was Marcos Pinto Ribeiro's BOSSA NOVA with his team of Tiago Quevedo, Breno Kneipp, Iam Paim, and Georgia Rodrigues. The next two places on the podium went to Uruguayan teams. Taking silver was Pedro Garra's PLAN B with a crew of Juan Real de Azúia, Quique Schickendantz, and Ivan Guicheff. Then, happy to wear the bronze medals were Diego Wulff's SHAMBHALA with a team of Carlos Fraschini, Francisco Bottino, and Frederico Fraschini.

One-Pro Division

As the sole entry in the One-Pro Division, it was a foregone conclusion that Argentinean Sergio Pendola's CACIQUE team of Matias Santangelo, Juan Filidoro, and Ignacio Giammona, would become the winners given that they started every race!

The next South American of J/70 will be in December 2023 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
