At 0055hrs AEDT, 27 December 2022, race leader and favourite, andoo Comanche declared herself fit for the jump over to Tasmania as she passed Green Cape. Six miles astern, it was only a few minutes later that LawConnect did the same…
“We are in the vicinity of 37degrees 13 minutes South at 0055hrs. Skipper declares we comply with the conditions of SI (Sailing Instructions) 35 (1) and would like to continue racing. Over.” This was logged by JBW.
andoo Comanche is now some 27nm adrift of her record pace from back in 2017.
LawConnect’s declaration was logged by HRC at position 37 11, 150 50.
Hamilton Island Wild Oats and Black Jack are a further four to five miles astern of Law Connect and the latter began calling Hobart Race Control at 0125hrs to make her declaration.
During various relayed conversations boats were reminded by HRC who said that this must be received by HRC or JBW to be a valid Green Cape declaration. Super-seasoned sailors on Chutzpah were assisting with the process on 4483 as HRC could hear Black Jack, but not vice versa. It was subsequently read out and accepted at position - 37 16, 150 50. You could hear a bit of frustration in Juan Vila’s voice, but he remained calm and spoke clearly all the way.
All of that said, and taking in the 'Mystic World of HF' as some of our team refer to it, things are much better than last year, when it was possibly the worst I have listened to from either out at sea or ashore.
JBW logged Stan Honey on board Hamilton Island Wild Oats at position 37 18 150 50 at 0143hrs
