SWYSA Winter Training & RS Tera SW RTG at Starcross Yacht Club

by Peter Solly 19 Dec 2022 22:32 PST 17 December 2022

Blue skies and mince pies

It was a very cold but sunny day on Saturday 17 December at Starcross Yacht Club, for the fourth session of the 2022/23 winter training. The weather was perfect, with wind of 7-10kts and a crisp blue sky.

With high quality coaching in class specific fleets of RS Tera, Topper and ILCA, the day included sessions on shore and afloat. After an initial session ashore, spent on Rules, the group split into the three separate fleets of Tera, Topper and ILCA. The fleets worked on starting, kiting downwind and boat-speed. Given other seasonal commitments at this time of year, there was a very healthy turnout of over 20 boats, with young sailors having travelled from as far as Fowey and Sutton Bingham.

After an excellent day both on and off the water, mince pies and mulled wine (non-alcoholic available!) were served, and then a hard-core continued into Exeter for an evening of ice skating.

The winter training relies heavily upon parents' help, in rescue boats, as Beachmaster and in the Galley - both as a way of keeping costs down, but also making it a friendly and fun-for-all event. Its this, along with the high quality of the coaching, which really sets these events apart. A big thank you to all of the Coaches (some of whom had travelled a long way), all of the parent helpers, and Starcross YC for hosting.

The next session for SWYSA and RS Tera South West RTG is 9th January 2023.
