18ft Skiff Spring Championship on Sydney Harbour - Race 7

by Frank Quealey 19 Nov 2022 21:37 PST 20 November 2022

The Yandoo 18ft skiff team of John (Woody) Winning, Fang Warren and Josh Porebski became the 2022-23 Spring champions after 30-35 knot westerly winds battering Sydney Harbour forced the abandonment of today's scheduled final race of the Spring Championship series.

It was a well-deserved victory for the consistent Yandoo team which would have gone into the race with a 14 points lead over nearest rival, The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines (Alex Marinelli, Darcy McCracken and Matt Doyle), which will now be declared second place in the championship.

Third place overall is the Smeg team of Michael Coxon, Ricky Bridge and Tom Anderson.

Top ten placings in the championship are: Yandoo on 23 points, The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines on 37, Smeg 38, Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Jim Colley) 43, Birkenhead Point Marina (Kirk Mitchell) 45, Lazarus (Marcus Ashley-Jones) 46, Rag & Famish Hotel (Harry Price) and Fisher & Paykel (Jordan Girdis) on 53, Burrawang-Young Henrys (Simon Nearn) 55 and Andoo (John Winning Jr) on 59

The first major championship of the 2022-23 season begins next Sunday, November 27, when the Australian 18 Footers League conducts Race 1 of the NSW Championship on Sydney Harbour.

Spectators can follow all the action from that race, and all races throughout the full championship season, on board the club's spectator ferry, as they have done for the past 87 years, which leaves Double Bay Wharf alongside the clubhouse at 2pm.

Booking online through the club's website www.18footers.com is essential, 18footers.com/18-footer-racing/spectator-ferry

For anyone who can't make it out onto the water, the League's live broadcast team will be out on Sydney Harbour to capture all the action. Live streaming is available at www.18footers.com by clicking on the '18 Footers TV' link.
