Halloween Cup Optimist at Circolo Vela Torbole - Day 1

by Elena Giolai 30 Oct 2022 23:20 PDT 30 October - 1 November 2021

The Halloween Cup of the Optimist class began at Circolo Vela Torbole, in collaboration with the Italian Sailing Federation and the Garda Trentino Vela Consortium. This year's event set a new record with 614 entries (484 juniors and 130 cadets) and is scheduled until Tuesday 1 November.

On this first day, the FIV Race Committee was punctual in giving the start at 12:00 to the first fleet, trying to take advantage of the strong northerly wind, which, however, after the start of two more batteries began to recede, allowing only the first yellow fleet to arrive regularly. For the other two starts, the race was cancelled due to a complete loss of wind. As has been the case over the last few days, the wind from the south did not arrive and so apart from the 'yellow fleet' there was nothing, postponing everything until early Monday morning, hoping that the wind from the north will continue to blow powerfully and for long enough for everyone to race. For the record, the race finished by the yellows was won by Christian Girani (CV Muggia-TS), followed by the American James Pine and Poland's Zofia Glaza.

It is perhaps the first time in this event, which closes the sailing regatta season on the Garda Trentino, that it has not rained: as in all of Italy there are summer temperatures, which just in the morning with twenty knots of wind from the north and the shade still present on the Torbolan waters, is a little cooler. Tomorrow morning, therefore, an early wake-up call for racers, staff on the water posaboe, security, Race Committee and Jury to take advantage of all the wind that the Alto Garda offers to fans of sailing and all water sports.
