2022 iQFOiL World Championships at Brest, France - Day 5

by iQFOiL Class 21 Oct 2022 14:11 PDT 14-22 October 2022

Two more races in for men and women

Day 5 at the iQFOiL World Championships in Brest started strong with the wind gusting close to 50 knots and intermittent rain during the whole first part of the day. At the end of the day, the race committee, after a long day of waiting and measuring the wind over and over, decided to go and race.

The plan intended for the day was: Gold Fleet at Rond 2 with Course Racing, 2 races of gold men back to back and straight after, two races back to back for the women. After this everybody would return to shore for a break and if the heavy rain allowed visibility, we would go with the marathon. But conditions kept us waiting the whole day.

What Actually Happened

It seemed like the wind was not gonna give us a break but it finally went down to about 25 knots and we went onto the initial plan of completing 2 races for the men and the women's gold fleets. Around 17:15 Race Committee decided that wewould go racing. Huig Jan Tak won the first race and got a second on the second race since Kamil Manowiecki (POL 72) and currenty on place 41 sneaked into the first place. Daniele Bennetti (ITA), currently on 6th place and making it onto the medal race, managed a 2-11. Sam Sills (GBR 60) on place 16th as of today managed a 3rd place on the first race while on the second one he went two places behind to manage a 5th. Luuc Van Opzeeland (NED 55) keeps his second place into the medal race managing a 5-3 in today's racing. Leader of the day, Sebastian Koerdel (GER 220) keeps his first position into tomorrow's medals since he's done such a good event so far that today's placings (25-18) are his 2 discards.

On the womens side, Shahar Tibi (ISR 3) claimed a win on the first race while on the second one she must have had some issues getting a 26th position. As of today, she goes into medal race falling from her yesterday's 2nd to a 4th position today. Sharon Kantor (ISR 390) managed a 2nd position on the first race and got a BDF in the second one which gets her a 12th position. Lola Sorin (FRA 31) had a pretty good day although the spicy conditions and managed a 3-1, this not being enough to make in into medals, she finishes the event on place 19th. And to finish the day, e've got the yellow bib of tomorrow's medal; Marta Maggetti (ITA157) got a 12-2 today and it landed her from 4th to 1th today on the general ranking.

So the medal race athletes, unless some protest are done later today, will be:
