Being a sailor comes with a lot of responsibility, of which a major requirement is to be able to communicate with other boats or services in case of an emergency. That's why having a reliable and tough handheld VHF Radio is a must.

In this article we are going to look at the IC-M25 which is one of the most popular radios developed by Icom.

The Icom IC-M25 is a sleek and slim marine transceiver that only weighs 220g. With its small profile, it makes this transceiver ideal for those who want to keep their devices as portable as possible, while still having access to all of the features they need! After some research Icom discovered it was the slimmest and lightest floating marine transceiver (As of July, 2015, researched by Icom).

The IC-M25 has great usability with a LCD display that is large and easy to read, 30% larger than its predecessor the IC-M23, and shows clearly large channel numbers and status icons. The buttons on the front panel are well set out providing simple and straightforward operation.

This VHF has an impressive battery life with the built-in 1500mAh lithium-ion battery allowing 11 hours (approx.) of long operation. This can then be charged using the accompanying Micro-B USB connector and supplied AC adapter. The pre-set four step battery life indicator will ensure you are on the ball, so you are never without your handheld.

With a powerful 550mW audio output you can hear them loud and clear. The volume loud and mute functions offer quick adjustment of the volume level by holding the VOL/SQL button and pushing the up or down button.

The IC-M25 is the perfect radio for all your boating needs. It has been designed to withstand rougher conditions, with an IPX7 waterproof construction that can handle depths up to 1m and 30 minutes of immersion before it becomes damaged. Plus, if you happen to place this device overboard - don't worry because it floats too! This is accompanied with a recovery LED light which will flash red.

Other Features:

  • Dual/Tri-watch functions
  • Instant access to Ch 16 or programmable call channel
  • Favorite channel function
  • Monitor function opens noise squelch
  • Auto scan function
  • LCD auto backlighting
  • AquaQuake™ draining function

Conclusion

If you're in the market for a new handheld VHF radio, we recommend checking out the Icom IC-M25. It's packed with features that sailors will love, and its practical design means that it can withstand being used in all conditions.
