Doyle Sails Swedish Moth National Championship Friday exhibition racing

by Swedish Moth Association 16 Sep 2022 22:08 PDT 16-18 September 2022

22 Moth sailors representing 7 nations gathered in Gothenburg for the Doyle Sails Swedish Moth Championship hosted by GKSS. Friday's racing consisted of four tune-up races, which saw the fleet sailing a SailGP style racecourse in a cold northerly wind of 15-18 knots.

A very strong fleet made up of five Olympians, Max Salminen (SWE), Fredrik Bergstrom (SWE), Katja Salskov-Iverson (DEN) and Emil Jarudd (SWE), along with SailGP sailors Phil Robertson, Kyle Langford and Tom Johnson, whom all reside in Scandinavia.

The pre-event title went to Kyle Langford on 11 points. Phil Robertson had an impressive 3 bullets, but a gear breakage in race 1 prevented him from taking the top spot, and Dave Gilmour rounded out the podium in 3rd place.

"Bloody epic, 20 boats, reaching starts with gate top and bottom marks, breeze on and flat water, doesn't get better than that in a Moth!", commented Robertson after hitting the shore.

Saturday's forecast is for strong northerly winds, but with the race course sheltered by the many islands of the archipelago it will give the sailors beautifully flat water. It will be a battle to keep the boats together with five races scheduled for Saturday.
