Davis Island Yacht Club is proud to host the 2022 2.4mR World Championship Regatta November 5-11, 2022.
The event is expected to draw around 80 sailors and their coaches from Europe, Central and North America, Asia, and Australia. Nine countries are already being represented with room for more.
The 2.4mR is described as a "one-person keelboat for all," designed to be "the most inclusive sailing boat available," regardless gender, physical strength, or age. The boats can be sailed by able-bodied and disabled sailors alike.
The boat harks back to the golden age of yacht racing with classic lines calling to mind America's Cup 12-meter boats. It evolved from what was known as a "mini-12." Established in 1993, the modern 2.4mR is just under 14 feet long, with 81 square feet of sail area, and draws 39 inches with a large bulb keel for stability.
The Davis Island Yacht Club is home to numerous regattas over the year, as well as providing an open-to-the-public summer learn-to-sail camp for youngsters and the opportunity for newcomers to try sailing during the daylight-savings-timed Thursday Night series.
The 2.4mR sailboats will launch on November 6; racing can be observed from the Davis Island Seaplane Basin park and on the water. Powerboaters are requested to register with the organizers and to keep clear of the racing area. The fleet will set sail each day, racing around inflatable marks in Upper Tampa Bay before returning to harbor.
