Allen Enterprise National Championship at Tenby Sailing Club - Day 3

by Phil Ford 25 Aug 2022 16:29 AEST 21-26 August 2022

Day 3 of the Allen Enterprise National Championship gave us a stable south westerly between 7 to 12 knots in cloudy conditions, with the occasional shift to keep the competitors thinking.

Late out of the gate in the first race of the day, Jane and Nick Scutt tacked immediately in behind the pathfinder to head inshore and pick up the starboard shift. From the early starters, only Phil Ford and Jeremy Stephens managed to cross the fleet. At the first mark, Jane and Nick rounded first, followed by Phil with Jane Humpage crewing, closely followed by Ann Jackson and Jeremy Stephens. Places remained the same for the downwind legs.

Up the second beat, Jane and Nick heading again for the inshore track overstood the mark, allowing the following trio to jump ahead. The remainder of the race provided a close battle with Phil and Jane taking the gun, followed by Jeremy and Becca Stephens, with Ann Jackson and Alan Skeens close behind. Early championship front runners Darren and Hayley Roach recovered from a poor first beat to finish in fifth, having decided for one race at least to play with the pack.

Race 6 started shortly after with a minor course change. With the breeze strengthening and the fleet favouring a late start, most of the competitors were pushing the race officers timing to see who could be last out. It was, however, the main protagonists starting relatively early against the fleet who rounded the first windward mark in good order. Normal service was resumed with Darren and Hayley Roach first round, followed by Phil and Jane, then Jeremy and Becca. Darren and Jeremy then lit the afterburners (if there is such a thing in the Ents) to stretch away from the following pack and have a private duel at the front. At the finish it was Darren and Hayley recording another bullet, Jeremy and Becca in second followed by Phil and Jane.

Going into the lay day, Darren has an impressive 5 wins, while the following two boats are searching to try and slow the Roach express that is threatening to steamroller the fleet. Racing resumes on Thursday with a changeable forecast but no lack of expectation.
