The Snipe World Championship, organized by Clube Naval de from August 20th to August 25th, officially started Saturday with a practice race and the opening ceremony taking place at this "Day 0".
The championship will mark the history of the Snipe class, not only for being the 50th edition, the 1st one post-Covid, but also for having a record number of entries: 87 teams, from 19 nations.
Among the approximately 180 sailors present, there are 5 Olympic athletes, a gold medalist among them, and 9 world sailing champions, so there is no shortage of candidates for the title.
From Spain, 3 crews will definitely fight for the first places: Martim Bermudez, sailing with Angela Pumariega, gold medalist at the London 2012 Olympic Games; Jordi Triay / Cristian Carbonell and Gustavo Del Castillo / Rafael Del Castillo, who have previously won European titles.
In the Brazilian delegation there are three other favourite crews to fight for the title: between Bruno Bethlem / Dante Bianchi, Alexandre Paradeda / Gabriel Kieling and Henrique Haddad / Gustavo Nascimento, there are 4 world titles, with this last team being the world title holders.
Among the many other candidates for the podium, there are two American teams that should also be mentioned: Ernesto Rodriguez / Kathleen Tocke, who recently won the Pan American Games and the Western Hemisphere Championship; and the duo formed by Augie Diaz, two-time World Champion of the class, and Arianna Buzzeti.
The races start Sunday and it looks like Cascais is going to deliver a good show: the forecast for the next five days shows north wind from 10 to 17 knots, with gusts going up to 26 knots.
