Solution National Championship 2022 at Lee-on-the-Solent Sailing Club

by Richard Brown 13 Aug 2022 07:12 PDT 6-7 August 2022

Sponsored by JJ Boats and Bainbridge International

With the forecast threatening light and variable winds for the whole weekend there was actually a pleasant breeze for most of the races thus allowing a full six race program to be completed.

Race 1-3 were completed on Saturday. With variable winds between f2-3 the race officers and assistants were kept busy trying to keep the courses sailable. A traditional Olympic course of triangle sausage made this task even more challenging but they rose to the challenge to achieve three decent length races which allowed the competitors a chance to challenge themselves and others.

Places changed throughout the day except at the front where Ian Morgan the Solutions new sailmaker lead the fleet scoring 3three 1st's. Peter Blackman lying in second and third being held three competitors only 1 point behind Peter.

Day two saw a 180 degree change in wind direction but no more strength than day 1. With points needed by all the sailors to catch Ian, the starts were highly contested and with no one knowing the way the shifts would go a lottery or skilful sailing was needed. Race 4 saw Richard Brown lead from start to finish but it was close with pack ending only seconds behind. Race 5 saw Ian Morgan return to form to claim another win, Jack Turnbull just overtaking Richard Brown on the beat to the line claiming 2nd. This meant that Ian had secured the regatta win but the following places were far from decided. Race 6 was sailed in light winds and saw several positions swapped through the 45 minute race.

A big thanks to the Lee-on-Solent SC Race Team, beach crew and caterers. Also to all the competitors who competed in testing conditions to make the regatta happen.
