29er World Championships 2022 at El Balís, Spain - Day 4

by International 29er Class 5 Aug 2022 07:51 PDT 31 July - 6 August, 2022

French team Hugo Revil and Karl Devaux have taken the lead of the 29er World Championships in the choppy waters of El Balis after three races on the first day of the final series, although tied on 46 points with the Italian team of Alex Demurtas and Giovanni Santi.

Day 4 of the World Championships saw light winds from the southwest around 7 knots, dropping to 5 knots as the day progressed. The Gold fleet was able to complete three races and the rest only two due to the decreasing wind.

The Spanish Laiseca sisters started very well in the Gold fleet, they were second in the first race of the finals, being at that time the best female crew. In the following races they scored 20th and 19th, which places them tenth overall and second in the female category behind the Irish team Lucia Cullen and Alana Twomey who had a solid day and lead the Women's category by four points and sit 8th overall. Manase Ichihashi and Rinko Goto from Japan lie in third place overnight.

The 29er fleet has enjoyed a recent surge in mixed teams competing in the main fleet and two mixed teams currently sit in the top ten. Argentinians Dogui and Vicky Van Avermaete currently sit in third position overall and the Swedish team of Hedving and Hugo Liljegren are in 9th as we go into the penultimate day of World Championship racing.

In the Under 17 Category Hungarians Soma Kis-Szolgyemi and Samuel Juhasz are leading, currently placed 6thoverall, with the Irish team Lucia Cullen and Alana Twomey in second.

Friday 5th August promises a light Easterly wind so the fleets will hopefully enjoy some racing in a new direction and a change in conditions.
