IOCA UK Optimist Nationals at Largs Sailing Club - Day 4

by Sandy Ramus 5 Aug 2022 02:37 AEST 30 July - August 2022

Junior and Main fleet were on the northern race area that gets cleaner breeze in a westerly. This a particularly beautiful stretch of water to sail on with hills and mountains on all sides.

The first race saw 15knts and very lumpy conditions meaning that working the boat hard was the key. The seniors race was again taken by Jasper Anderson gaining his second bullet of the regatta and second was, the ever consistent, Joe Wimpory.

The second race took a while to get off due to shifting winds and by the time the fleets started the wind had decreased and the sea state flatten. This race was all about watching the big black clouds that were rolling down either the left or the right side of the course. Extra breeze and positive shifts were to be had for those paying attention. Leo Gosling again got the line in the Juniors and Lila Edwards in the seniors.

It was lay day for Regatta Coached and Regatta Racing fleets today! Taking a break from training, both fleets sailed in light winds over to the Isle of Cumbrae.

On arrival, everyone warmed up with hot chocolate and biscuits before football on the beach and a team treasure hunt, with all sailors successfully finding the buried treasure - Tunnock's caramel wafers and teacakes for everyone! The fun afternoon ended with a speedy tow all the way back to the slip. Happy sailors all round!
