29er World Championships 2022 at El Balís, Spain - Day 2

by International 29er Class 3 Aug 2022 20:48 AEST 31 July - 6 August, 2022

The Canarian crew Yoel Hernández and Álvaro Alonso top the overnight leaderboard of the 29er World Championship, in the stunning waters of the Club Nàutic El Balís, after a second long day, intense, but complete. With 242 boats competing for the title, the racing is incredibly close with only 7 points separating 1st to 10th position as the Championship progresses into the third and final day of qualifying races.

After some delay, an early afternoon breeze between 8 and 12 knots from the southwest set in, veering throughout the day and allowing three races to be held in all fleets. The fleets were again anxious to get started and there were numerous black-flag DSQ's added to early those starter's scores.

Hernández and Alonso went from ninth to first position after having a near perfect day scoring a 1-4-1 that took them to the top of the table after the first five races. They are followed by two Italian boats, Alex Demurtras and Giovanni Santi, who are tied for second on points with Hernández and Alonso; while third are Zeno Valerio Marchesini and Carlo Vittoli, two points from the lead.

To top mixed team is currently Argentinian siblings Dougi and Vicky Van Avermaete and the top Female teams of Lucia Cullen and Alana Twomey (IRL) currently in sit 21st place with HKG team Emily Polson and Maddelena Di Salvo close behind in 23rd overall.

Wednesday 3rd August concludes the qualifying series and the fleet will then be split into more permanent fleet assignments - where those classified in the Gold fleet will fight for the medals in the Men's, Women's and Under 17 categories.
