Craftinsure Bass Week - Days 1 & 2

by Bass Press 1 Aug 2022 13:35 PDT 30 July - 7 August 2022

Craftinsure Bass Week 2022 kicked off with fine westerly winds and a mix of Lakeland sunshine and showers. One hundred and twenty-five boats split across nine fleets raced for the Jennings Challenge, a four-race series with three to count.

Saturday was damp and grey, but the wind was good, blowing from the favourable westerly direction. The sun made an appearance on Sunday and by the time prize-giving was held it was glamour. Sunday started with a short postponement as the breeze settled in from the west. This was welcomed by the majority, thanks to a DJ Enterprise disco keeping the après sail going well into the early hours.

Rod Daniels from Craftinsure, our Bass Week title sponsor, offered insurance advice and guidance for entrants before presenting the prizes.

In the fast handicap fleet, Rob Cook from Bass/Northampton, sailing a Phantom, won both races on Saturday which was enough to see him win overall. Robert Mountain and Victoria Manifold, from Blackpool and Fleetwood YC, won the Flying Fifteen fleet on countback from Simon Longstaff and Jonathon Denwood, both counting three points. Jamie Tylecote and Thomas Coates from Budworth made easy work of the RS200 fleet, counting three first places.

In the medium handicap, it was the 2000s leading the way, with Bass members Matt and Oliver Sharman counting three bullets ahead of Bass Week newcomers Rob and Gemma Burridge. Similarly in the twenty-one strong Laser fleet, Tim Keighley from West Riding also counted three first places. Bass members David and Lynn Lawson counted three first places to win the GP14s, as did Robin Dawson in the Solo fleet. Guy Wheeler and Elaine Ross from Annandale SC finished first Graduate, just a point ahead of Chris and Chloe Parker.

In the slow handicap, David Moore and Bernard Taylor, previous Bass Week pursuit race winners, counted three first places in their Wanderer. Graham and Emily/Abigail Vials won the Mirror/Topper Tera fleet, with Alex Balding finishing first Topper and James Reekie first RS Tera pro.

Next up is the children's and adult quiz night, then onto the mid-week series starting with the inaugural novice race on Monday morning followed by the Luffing Cup on Monday afternoon.

Throughout the week you can visit our Bass Week website for daily reports, results, photographs and general Cumbrian craic from William and the many race teams.
