Worcestershire youth sailors complete overnight challenge to raise funds for charity

by Gareth Brookes 11 Jul 2022 06:41 PDT 2 July 2022

Thirteen young sailors from Worcestershire proved their determination and skill with an epic sailing challenge to raise funds for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.

The young members of Worcestershire Youth Sailing Association completed their mission at Aztec Adventure, Upton Warren. The task was to keep their 16-foot dinghy sailing for 12 hours non-stop and overnight after starting at 8pm on a Saturday evening.

Despite the light winds and very heavy eyelids, the young sailors completed their mission and have so far raised £1,400 for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust in the process.

Freddie, aged 12, said: “It was super hard to keep going through the night and to work out where the wind was coming from and where we were supposed to be going to, whilst staying awake! I think I need a good night sleep before doing it again, or anything else!”

The sailors from across the county of Worcestershire were aged 10-18 and had all learnt to sail through Aztec Adventure. They now practice their skills and have fun sailing at Upton Warren through Worcestershire Youth Sailing Association.

Find out more about courses and opportunities for young people to get on the water with Aztec Adventure at www.aztecadventure.co.uk or to learn about Worcestershire Youth Sailing Association visit www.wysa.club

Fundraising is ongoing from the 12-hour sail, which took place on 2nd July, and donations for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust are still being gratefully received at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/WYSA22
