2022 ORC Worlds at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda - Day 3

Today the Race Committee at the 2022 ORC World Championship decided the very light and shifty wind conditions were not suitable to hold any racing appropriate for a World Championship event.

The intent was to conduct inshore windward/leeward races for Class C and Classes A and B together on two course areas east of the harbor at Porto Cervo, but the conditions with light air and highly variable wind shifts made it impossible to set a stable and fair race course.

Class A had one race start, but this race was abandoned as conditions deteriorated. On the Class C course area the conditions were even worse, with no start possible.

The video to the right is a light-hearted synopsis of this day with postponements and abandonments - thanks to the video team at Studio Borlenghi/YCCS.

The weather forecast for tomorrow is more favorable, with afternoon winds from the north and northwest predicted to approach 15-20 knots, perfect conditions for Day 4 of the event. Windward/leeward racing is intended to start one hour earlier tomorrow at 1100 in anticipation of this forecast, with as many as three races possible if the conditions permit.

The remaining schedule for the event includes a short offshore race to be held on Wednesday 29 June, followed by inshore racing to resume on the final day on Thursday 30 June.

Overnight last night the Race Committee discovered several entries among all three classes that had strayed into exclusion zones forbidden to entry during the Offshore race and changed the race results accordingly.

A few of these decisions are being challenged now in hearings with the International Jury, with final decisions uncertain at this time. Race results from the Offshore race are non-discardable in the series scoring, so this is an issue receiving close attention.
