The IC37 Class officially kicked off the Summer 2022 season last weekend with a Training Weekend in Newport, Rhode Island led by class coach Moose McClintock.

The two-day event began each day with light winds before transitioning to the classic southwest Narragansett Bay summer sea breeze lending itself to perfect training conditions. Ten teams took advantage of this unique opportunity the IC37 Class provides for both the New York Yacht Club chartered boats and the privately-owned boats alike.

As there are a number of new owners and charterers to the Class this year, veteran IC37 teams were partnered with the newcomers to relay tips and practical advice when it comes to crew work, sail trim, and boat speed. The pairing then allowed Coach McClintock to circulate and provide targeted advice as needed for the sailors.

Peter McClennen and his crew on Gamecock in addition to the other experienced boats, started one of the mornings off by demonstrating the choreography of their tacks, gybes, sets, and takedowns while on the dock. "A crews' boat handling in maneuvers can cost or reward up to three or five boat lengths easily," says McClennen. "Our team works hard to perfect those moves and we are happy to share what we have learned to help flatten the learning curve for the other teams as collaboration will only make racing better for everyone."

Adding even more support to a class known for a wealth of resources, the full NYYC Race Committee joined the fleet on the water to help facilitate practice races culminating in about 10 starts and 6 full races.

Next up, this coming weekend (June 10-12), 21 IC37s will line up on the starting line for the 168th NYYC Annual Regatta - the largest of any Annual Regatta since the fleet's inception in 2019. This regatta will mark the first event for seven new IC37 teams: Glenn Darden & George Francisco (HHB), Charles Kenahan (Mahalo), Howard Spencer (Menace), Mike Mayer (Kashmir), Rodrick Jabin (Ramrod), Kurt Rauschenbach & Thomas Newman (Res Potentia), Peter Wagner (Skeleton Key), and Peter Cummiskey (Ursa Minor).

Keep up with the latest in NYYC Annual Regatta news at nyyc.org and their social media. IC37 Class will be sharing updates from the water and photos as well.
