J/Teams sweep ORC Division at North Sea Regatta

This past week, several Dutch and British teams sailed in the popular North Sea Week. The event is comprised of two Offshore races- the North Sea Race and the Vuerrschepen Race- and three days of Inshore Races over seven days.

In the first portion of the event, the Offshores, J/Teams ended up dominating the ORC Division as well as posting podium finishes in the IRC Division scoring. Here is how it all went down between the two races and how they fare overall in the Offshores combined scoring.

North Sea Race- 181.0nm:

The race starts off Scheveningen, The Netherlands, and heads north to a turning mark off Germany, the fleet turns left and heads across the English Channel to a buoy off the southeastern United Kingdom, then down to the finish off Harwich Port.

ORC Overall

Martijn Graafmans' J/109 EAU-J won by over 41 minutes corrected time, followed by Paul Manuel's J/99 JONGEHEER in second place. Fifth was Frans van Cappelle's J/122E MOANA, followed by Ubbo Neisingh's J/112E NARWAL in 6th position.

Taking second in ORC 1 Class was Frans van Cappelle's J/122E MOANA and fourth went to Ronald Prins' J/122E SAILMON JR.

J/Teams nearly swept the podium in ORC 2 Class. Winning was Martin Graafmans' J/109 EAU-J, followed by Paul Manuel's J/99 JONGEHEER in second. Fourth went to Ubbo Neisingh's J/112E NARWAL, missing the bronze medal by a mere nine minutes corrected time.

For the ORC Doublehanded Division, the same two teams that swept the top spots in ORC 2 also won. The J/109 EAU-J team was Martijn Graffmans & Diederik Forma in first, while the J/99 JONGEHEER duo was Paul Manuel & Huib Bannier in second place.

IRC Overall

Frans van Cappelle's J/122E MOANA took 5th place IRC Overall and second place IRC 1 Class. For the rest of IRC 1 Class, Ronald Prins' J/122E SAILMON JR took fourth place and Nick Angel's J/121 ROCK LOBSTER took fifth place.

Vuuerschepen Race:

Winning IRC 1 class was Cappelle's J/122E MOANA, followed by her stablemate, Prins' J/122E SAILMON JR in second.

J/Teams swept the ORC 1 class. Winning was van Cappelle's J/122E MOANA, followed by Prins' J/122E SAILMON JR in second, Frederic de Visser's J/121 SPITFIRE in third, and Gert Roukema's J/122 FAIR DINKUM in fourth.

Winning the ORC 3 class was Simeon Tienpont's J/35 FEVER, taking the class by nearly an hour on corrected time.

North Sea Regatta Offshores:

The combined scores of the North Sea Race and the Vuuerschepen Race counted for the Offshore Series of the North Sea Regatta.

Winning both the ORC 1 Class and the IRC 1 Class was Capelle's J/122E MOANA, followed by Prins' J/122E SAILMON JR in third place in both divisions.

The ORC 2 Class saw Neisingh's J/112E NARWAL take the bronze. Just off the pace and finishing 5th was Kees Mijs' J/109 ARETHUSA, with Michael Rietz's J/105 PANTHER in sixth.

For ORC 3 Class, it was Tienpont's J/35 FEVER taking the silver medal for the two events.
