Globe 40 Race - Update from GryphonSolo2: Weather improving

by Joe Harris, GryphonSolo2 2 Jun 2022 14:23 UTC

It seemed when we tacked this morning that we were rounding third and heading for home and I truly hope we are.

After slogging North for two days to escape two dangerous low-pressure systems and to set up a good approach angle, we have tacked on to port and headed SE but are still facing headwinds directly from the East that are preventing us from pointing the bow directly at Lorient.

Our weather models show the winds have lifted into the NE, but it has not happened out here yet. So we are once again hard on the wind in 22k of wind at a 30-degree heel angle but luckily the sea state is more favorable so we are not slamming near as much - thank god. We have stacked everything we own to windward to try to flatten the boat out but we are still on our ear. So please send us good wind vibes for the breeze to back into the North and we can have a sleigh ride to France.

In other GS2 news, our bird friend Jenny (not Penny, as everyone knows Forest Gump's girlfriend was Jenny), is having a nice rest and is dining from our casual Italian menu prepared by Chef Roger. Jenny has eaten some tuna and some crackers and some cheese and has now taken three big dumps on our main halyard right near our cockpit door. We quietly clean up Jenny's dumps and feed her some more as she seems to have quietly taken command of the vessel and does not appear at all interested in leaving. So hopefully she can join us for drinks and dinner in Lorient.

So that's it from the high seas today. Hope to arrive Lorient Sunday or Monday, wind gods willing.
