iQFoil European Champs: Two Kiwis progress to Gold fleets - Day 2

by Richard Gladwell/Sail-World.com/nz 18 May 2022 22:45 PDT 19 May 2022

The two top New Zealanders have had differing fortunes on Day 2 of the iQFoil Europeans being sailed in Torbole, Lake Garda in Northern Italy, however both have qualified in the Gold fleet for Mens and Womens competition.

The event the first major international title for the iGFoil has attracted 200 competitors in the Mens and Womens fleet for the class which will make its Olympic debut at Paris2024.

Sailing in the Qualification Round where the 154 Mens entries are split into Blue and Yellow fleets, Armit dropped out of the top ten overall to lie in 17th while Veerle ten Have had a very good day to lie in 10th overall - a big jump from being 33rd overnight. She was helped by the introduction of a second discard from her points score, allowing her to drop the BFD and 28th places acquired yesterday from her series points score.

Armit used the double discard to blot up a couple of his indiscretions being a 45th and a 16th from Day 2, his other places were a second 16th place and best place on the day of a 10th.

The thermal wind did not arrive as expected, and the racing did not get underway until 11.00am.

Four other Kiwis are also competing see the full results click here and a fuller report click here
