The first race of the season is always much anticipated, the coming together of various training groups, it's when we find out who the players are going to be for the year ahead.

This year, having taken time out from the Figaro class in search of sponsorship for the Vendée Globe, Alan jumped back into his trusty Figaro Beneteau 3 ahead of the Solo Maître Coq. Going into the race with little time on the water in the class over the past 6 months having taken time out to look for sponsorship for the Vendee Globe.

It is great to see that the British skipper is able to jump back in and straight away be at the top of the fleet, this shows a maturity gained through numerous years of hard work not only in the figaro class but in offshore sailing and campaign management. In an exciting series of three different types of races; offshore, windward leeward & coastal. Alan demonstrated his ability to not only control offshore strategy but also close contact inshore racing and boat handling. Looking cool and calm on the water he posted consistent results throughout the event to take a respectable 3rd place overall in the Solo Maître Coq behind REGION BRETAGNE CMB's Tom LAPERCHE and REGION NORMANDIE's Guillaume PIROUELLE.

"The level is high, the racing is tight and I love it. It felt so natural to jump back into the boat, I felt completely at one with her and I am really happy with the overall result. There are a few small tweaks and areas to work on but that is normal. What is important is that I came out and have shown the world I am here to win this year." comments Alan on the event.

Although competing in the Figaro class Roberts has sights towards the Vendée Globe, He is certainly showing that he is in a position not only to compete in the Vendée but stands a good chance of stepping on the podium of the event with the right project & boat following in the footsteps of previous winners and top 3's of the Vendée through the ultra competitive Figaro class.

There is a series of races this season in the Figaro class, for those who don't know, the tracking of these events is an addictive pass time, especially with Alan's current form:

  • Trophée Banque Populaire Grand Ouest - 1st - 7th May
  • Allmer Cup 21st - 29th May
  • Sardinha Cup - 6th - 18th June
  • Solo Concarneau 3rd - 7th August
  • La Solitaire du Figaro - 21st August - 10th September (the big event of the season)
